Why Curry Pizza Works

I know what you are thinking, does Italian pizza really go with Indian food? And the answer is YES, it most definitely does! I am simply substituting a traditional naan bread or bed of rice for a homemade pizza crust. All the other ingredients are the same as if you ordered a Thai chicken curry dish at a restaurant. It is truly the best way to spice up your pizza game and put a creative twist on eating chicken curry. A must try fancy pizza combo!

Chicken Curry Pizza Ingredients

Most pizza recipes have a few basic ingredients that are consistent across the board but this unique Thai Indian curry pizza combo takes an Italian tradition to a whole new level! I will break down what I use and why and give you a few alternatives.

A wooden cutting board with bowls of shredded cheese and diced chicken, and piles of sliced red onion, julienned carrots, diced bell peppers, a round dough ball, and a bowl of brown sauce, with a knife nearby.

Pizza Dough – Nothing beats homemade pizza dough especially if you have a pizza oven. Simply put, it just tastes better. If you have never made pizza dough before, it can be a little nerve racking at first, but I promise it is very easy!

If you decide to go the homemade route, this is my favorite pizza dough recipe but does take about 24 hours to make. If you don’t have that much time, this is the best pizza dough for beginners and has a short rise time. If you prefer a thin pizza crust my St. Louis style crust is made on a pizza stone and requires no yeast. But if you need a quick fix, this is one of my favorite ways to make a fast pizza flatbread with a baking sheet.

Pizza Sauce – This wouldn’t be a chicken curry pizza without the curry sauce, now would it? This curry pizza skips the traditional red tomato sauce and turns up the heat with a homemade curry sauce that combines elements normally found in both Indian cooking and Thai curries for a delicious coconut curry sauce. This easy sauce only takes 10 minutes to make and is totally worth it! But if you are short on time you can use pre-made sauces found in grocery stores too.

Chicken – I actually use chicken on a lot of my pizzas and I think the most efficient option is to either use canned chicken or pressure cook a chicken breast. Did you know you can toss a frozen chicken breast in the Instant Pot and it will be done in 20 min? True story. In either case it is best to either use shredded chicken or dice up the cooked chicken into small pieces for even distribution. Either way the chicken needs to be cooked prior to using on your pizza. You can also use leftover rotisserie chicken if you want.

Onion – I chose to use a red onion here but you can also use a white or a yellow onion. Green onions would also work on this pizza.

Cheese – You can use whatever type of cheese you would like here, but I recommend using a milder cheese like mozzarella or pepper jack if you like a little extra heat. Both are a good mild melting cheese and don’t overpower the bold flavors of the curry sauce. You can also use fresh mozzarella cheese if you have it.

If making your pizza in a high heat pizza oven, I recommend shredding your own cheese. When cooking at high heat shredding real cheese is better because the melting point of bagged cheese is different since they coat it in cornstarch during packaging. If you have a stand mixer you can use this cheese grater attachment to shred your cheese in seconds!

Fresh Vegetables – You can add whatever fresh veggies you would like, but I normally use red, yellow, or orange bell peppers and shredded carrots as they are commonly used in curry dishes. I always add my veggies to the pizza raw but you can also stir fry them in a pan before putting them on the pizza if you prefer.

Pro Tip: To speed up the chopping process on veggies and onions, I use this slicer. It is truly a game changer when it comes to prep work!

Units Scale
Curry Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Unsalted Butted
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste no salt added
  • 1 tbsp Curry Powder
  • 1 tbsp Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Coconut Milk
  • 1/4 cup Water

Chicken Curry Pizza
  • Pizza Dough (homemade or pre-made dough)
  • 6 oz Chicken Breast cooked and diced or shredded
  • 1/2 Red Onion sliced
  • 1/4 cup Shredded Carrots
  • 1/2 Red, Yellow, or Orange Bell Pepper diced
  • 4 Green Onions chopped
  • 1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese

Instructions

Curry Sauce Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium low heat.
  2. Whisk in tomato paste and spices. This will be a lumpy thick paste.
  3. Slowly whisk in coconut milk and water and increase to medium heat. Whisk until sauce is fully combined.
  4. Add sour cream and whisk until combined.
  5. Simmer on medium-low heat for about 5 minutes stirring occasionally. DO NOT allow the sauce to boil. The sauce will thicken as it cooks.
  6. Finish the sauce with the juice of half a lime and stir.
  7. Note, this is a very spicy curry sauce. You can control the spice level by reducing the amount of red pepper flakes.
  8. You may have leftover curry sauce.

Chicken Curry Pizza Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven according to pizza dough instructions.
  2. Cook chicken and dice or shred with a fork once cooked.
  3. Slice onions, carrots, the bell pepper and set aside.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, stretch out pizza dough into a circular shape.
  5. Spoon the curry sauce onto the top of the dough and use the back of the spoon to spread it evenly across the whole thing leaving about an inch of dough exposed along the edges. I usually use 3-4 tablespoons per pizza.
  6. Add the chicken pieces to the top of the curry sauce.
  7. Add onion slices, carrots, and bell peppers to the top of the pizza.
  8. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  9. Bake pizza in the preheated oven according to pizza dough instructions or until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  10. Top with cilantro or green onions.

Notes

This is enough to make three 10 inch pizzas. Cooking time will vary based on what type of pizza dough you use and what type of oven you bake it in.

In the event you have leftover pizza, you can store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. If you make one of my homemade doughs, use or freeze uncooked dough within 3 days. If you have leftover curry sauce you can serve it over tilapia and rice.
