What is Green Goddess Dip?
Green goddess dip is a recipe an old family friend used to make and we could never eat just a little bit. While it is green in color, don’t let that fool you. This dip is full of flavor from fresh ingredients and of course cheese. It is a mixture of cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, red onion, red and green bell peppers, and green goddess dressing. The best part is it can be made ahead of time and only takes 10 minutes to make!
Ingredients
This delicious dip could not be easier to make! It only uses a handful of ingredients but packs a ton of flavor. Let me break down the ingredient list and and share some helpful tips.
Green Goddess Dressing – The saucy component of this dip is green goddess dressing. Noted for its green color, this is an old salad dressing recipe that originated in the early 1920s at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Classic green goddess dressing has a creamy texture and is usually made with a variety of green, fresh herbs and produce like lemon juice and garlic cloves. The base is usually a dairy component like Greek yogurt, mayo, sour cream, and sometimes creamy avocado.
If you cannot find a bottle at your local grocery store, I have a super easy green goddess dressing recipe that uses yogurt, fresh parsley, and fresh basil. You will need a double batch of dressing for this dip. PS. this dressing is also really good on a cobb spring salad!
Red Bell Pepper – The chopped red peppers in this dip flavor it as it sits. I always use red bell peppers because of their sweet taste, but orange and yellow bell peppers can also be used. You can also use mini sweet peppers but will need 3-4 per regular size bell pepper.
Green Bell Pepper – Like the red peppers, green peppers also flavor the dip. Because green peppers have a unique flavor, I do not recommend substituting them. To speed up the chopping process I use this slicer.
Red Onion – I chose to use a red onion here because red onions are best served raw or pickled. You could also use a white or yellow onion but the flavor will be slightly different. While a green onion would also be good in this dip, the flavor will be different from a traditional onion.
Cheddar Cheese – You know I am a big advocate of shredding your own cheese, but in this case I actually recommend buying the pre-shredded bagged cheese because I think freshly shredded cheese would be too sticky here. I used cheddar for a stronger flavor but you could also use a blend if you like.
Mozzarella Cheese – The second cheese in this recipe is mozzarella cheese. Again I used bagged cheese here for the consistency. I recommend a milder cheese here since the cheddar has a stronger flavor, but I also think Monterey Jack or pepper Jack would be a good combo.
Fresh Jalapenos (optional)  – These are definitely optional and you can skip them if your taste buds don’t enjoy spicy, but I like a little spice in my life 🙂 You can control the spice level by removing the seeds. For more heat, keep the seeds in or do half with the seeds and half without to meet somewhere in the middle. Since the spiciness of jalapenos varies, I usually taste mine before I decide but I normally do remove the seeds.
Pro tip: A jalapeño pepper with striations on the exterior or that is changing color from green to red or orange is spicier. This jalapeno was left on the vine longer and will have more heat.Â
Dippers – All great dips need a dipper! Crispy tortilla chips are probably the best option here, but you could also use crackers or fresh raw veggies like baby carrots, cauliflower, or celery for a lighter option.

Mixing Options
In my opinion the best way to mix this dip is to add all the ingredients to a medium bowl with a lid and shake it. It’s the perfect way to combine everything without making a mess or smashing all the ingredients. If you don’t have a bowl with a lid you can cover a bowl with a plate or hand mix with a wooden spoon.
