What are Chocolate Covered Oreos?

Exactly what they sound like! Oreo cookies are crunchy, chocolate sandwich cookies with a sweet vanilla cream filling. Often a favorite to dunk in milk, they are also delicious when dipped in chocolate or covered in it.

Chocolate Covered Oreo Cookie Ingredient List

These easy patriotic cookies are an easy and fun dessert for the 4th of July and you only need three basic kitchen ingredients to make them!  Here are my notes for you 😉

Melting Chocolate  – When dipping anything in chocolate it is important to use the correct kind of chocolate. While you could use regular or white chocolate chips here, melting or baking chocolate will give you better results. Chocolate chips have additives that prevent them from melting since they are frequently baked inside of cookies. Chocolate chips will take longer to melt, will not be as smooth when melted, and will set less evenly after the Oreos are dipped.

I used vanilla candy coating here which is meant to be dipped. This comes in a dark chocolate option which you could also use here. Because I was going for festive cookies I stuck with the white chocolate option. You can find melting chocolate in the baking aisle at your local grocery store.

Oreo Cookies – The key ingredient and an American classic! I used real Oreos here because I found a bulk box at Costco that had sleeves of 13! This is perfect for me because I go in spurts where I crave Oreos but I usually cannot eat a whole package before they go stale. You can use any type of sandwich cookie here though. You could even use white Oreos or the two tone cookies. Just make sure to choose a sturdy cookie and avoid chewy cookies because they won’t hold up as well.

Sprinkles – To keep decorating really simple, I used patriotic red, white, and blue sprinkles. I found a fun color combo container with multiple options and it worked perfectly! In all I used three color combinations of sprinkles.

Melting the Chocolate

I melted the chocolate in the microwave in the tray it came with but you can also use a medium bowl. Before melting I used a knife to break the chocolate along the large lines to help the heat distribute to the middle. Microwave on 50% power in 30 second intervals. After about 90 seconds the chocolate should start to get melty. Once it starts to melt, microwave on 50% power in 15 second intervals stirring in between until the chocolate is smooth. Do not rush the melting process or it could burn and will be ruined. The chocolate should be fairly hot to keep it smooth.

After it sits at room temperature for a while it will become more difficult to work with. About halfway through dipping I had to reheat my chocolate to keep it pliable.

Dipping the Cookies

You have a few options for dipping. First, you can use white chocolate, milk, or dark chocolate to dip the cookies. I liked the way the white chocolate went with the theme but you can use dark as well. Then you can either dip half the cookie or cover the entire Oreo. I made mine both ways.

The best way to dip the cookies is to dunk them in and then rotate them around a little to make sure it is evenly coated. Almost like a dredge. To coat the entire cookie, dunk the whole thing in and then flip it over to coat the other side.

After coating the Oreos, lay them out to set up on a cookie sheet or wire rack lined with wax paper or parchment paper. For my half dipped cookies I found that I could stand them up on end in my mini muffin tin so I could decorate both sides.

Decorating the Cookies

To keep these cookies simple I only used patriotic sprinkles to decorate them. But you could use candy in red, white, and blue colors, royal icing, or make red and blue chocolate with food coloring.

After the cookies are dipped and still wet, use your hand to drizzle the sprinkles over each cookie. Technically you can dip them in the sprinkles too, but you will need to use a lot more sprinkles that way. I tried this and it was just too many sprinkles on one cookie in my opinion.

Leftover chocolate covered Oreos should be stored in an airtight container in the pantry for up to a week. After that the Oreos will start to get soft on the inside.

When to Serve Patriotic Chocolate Covered Oreo Cookies

This super easy patriotic dessert is a great addition to a summer gathering, barbecue, or block party when you want to add a little red, white, and blue to the celebration. I love making these for a patriotic holiday like Independence day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. These festive 4th of July cookies are always a crowd pleaser at summer parties and kids love them!

While I often make this as a tasty dessert for July 4th, it could easily transition into other holidays. Simply swap out the red, white, and blue sprinkles for other holiday colors. Use festive red and green sprinkles for Christmas, black and orange for Halloween, or pink and red for Valentine’s day!
