What are Scrambled Eggs?

How do you take your eggs? A common question when serving up breakfast. There are many ways to make eggs, scrambled, sunny side up, deviled, poached, or as an omelet. And if I am being completely honest, scrambled eggs usually win the coin toss because they are so quick and easy.

As the name suggests, scrambled eggs are a cooking style in which the egg yolks are broken up and cooked to create smaller bits of egg resembling soft curds. Scrambled eggs are often mixed with some amount of cheese, milk, herbs, seasonings, and sometimes fresh veggies like chopped onions or peppers. For this version I have kept things simple with a cheesy scrambled eggs recipe.

Ingredients

This easy scrambled egg recipe is the perfect breakfast ready in just 5 minutes! It uses simple ingredients you probably already have stocked in your pantry and fridge. Here are my ingredient notes and simple tips to make perfect scrambled eggs.

A kitchen counter displays ingredients for a scrambled eggs with cheese recipe, including a bottle of Worcestershire sauce, a container of Kinders garlic seasoning, a measuring cup with milk, a small white bowl of shredded cheese, a glass bowl with two eggs, and a pair of salt and pepper shakers.

Eggs  – The base of this dish is uncooked eggs. I use regular store bought cage free eggs but you can use brown eggs or even fresh eggs if you have your own chickens. If you are on a medically restrictive diet you can also use egg whites.

Milk – For this recipe I used 2% milk. Adding milk makes fluffy eggs assuming you do not overcook them. You can also use half and half, whole milk, or even heavy cream for similar results. If you choose to use a non-dairy milk just make sure it is a neutral flavor so it doesn’t alter the taste of the eggs.

Worcestershire Sauce  This is my secret ingredient when it comes to scrambled eggs! The condiment no one can pronounce correctly. You just tried to say it out loud, didn’t you? haha! But this potent sauce will add quite a bit of flavor with its umami flavor of sweet, salty, and sour all at once.

Wood Fired Garlic Seasoning – If you have never had this spice blend, it’s a mix of garlic and smoky flavors and really adds a lot of seasoning to a dish. I buy mine at Costco, but you can find it at most regular grocery stores too. If you don’t have this or can not find it, a mix of garlic salt and smoked paprika or regular will be similar.

Cheddar Cheese – Cheesy eggs are the best! I used white and yellow cheddar on my eggs, but feel free to use any cheese you like. Monterey Jack, American cheese, and feta are all great options for eggs. Feel free to shred your own cheese or use pre-shredded cheese. Just note that I split the cheese between the egg mixture and the finished eggs so there is cheesy goodness in every bite! I add the second half when the eggs are still hot in the pan so the cheese melts on top.

Nearby, an everything bagel with a bite taken out and spread with cream cheese is visible. In the background, there is a bowl of oranges and some bagels—a perfect scrambled eggs with cheese recipe breakfast scene.

Chives – I use fresh chives as a garnish on the top of the eggs. They add a ton of flavor and make for a pretty presentation. You can also use green onions as they have a similar taste to chives.

Red Pepper Flakes – I like spicy food a lot and tend to add chili flakes or hot sauce to most of my savory dishes. This is totally an optional ingredient, but it gives the eggs a little heat if you are into that.

Butter  – I used melted butter to coat the pan and add flavor to eggs. You can use real butter or margarine here or even olive oil.

Salt & Black Pepper – Like all dishes a pinch of salt and pepper goes a long way with the flavor. I only do a few shakes of each because the wood fired garlic seasoning also contains salt so keep that in mind.

Mixing Options

If you do not own a French whisk, do yourself a favor a get one. This is one of my most frequently used kitchen tools. It is more slender than a full size whisk and is usually shorter too. They are perfect for scrambling eggs, making a roux, or mixing up easy condiments and sauces. If you do not have a whisk, you can also use a fork.

Description

Looking for a fast and easy healthy meal for the family that won’t leave you hungry? This easy cheesy scrambled eggs recipe is my favorite way to make breakfast and hits the spot every time! They are soft and creamy eggs full of flavor and are ready in five minutes! It doesn’t matter if you make them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you will want to make this cheddar scrambled egg recipe over and over again!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Milk
  • 1/2 tsp Woodfired Garlic Seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Cheddar Cheese shredded and divided
  • 1 tbsp butter or margarine
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • Chives or Green Onions for garnish
  • Red Pepper Flakes for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat a small nonstick skillet over medium heat on the stove top. I use my smallest one which is an 8 inch pan.
  2. Crack two eggs into a small bowl being careful not to get any shells in the bowl.
  3. Add milk, seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, and one tablespoon of cheese to the bowl and lightly whisk with the eggs.
  4. Melt one tablespoon of butter or margarine in the skillet and coat the pan with it.
  5. Pour the whisked eggs mixture into the center of the pan and reduce to medium low heat. Allow the eggs to spread out to the edge of the pan.
  6. Allow the eggs to cook for a few seconds before you move them around the pan with a silicone spatula. You will want to sir them every 30 seconds or so to break up the single layer into fluffy curds of egg.
  7. Cook for 3-5 minutes without increasing the heat. If the heat is too high the eggs will become rubbery. For a wetter egg or a soft scramble, cook for closer to 3 minutes.
  8. Top the eggs with cheese while they are still in the pan right before they are done cooking so the cheese melts.

When to Make Scrambled Eggs

While I think the best scrambled eggs are served on the weekends with a side of bacon, a bagel and cream cheese, and a chocolate Frappuccino, easy recipes like this can be made anytime! I often make scrambled eggs for breakfast, lunch, or dinner when I am short on time and need to make a quick meal. Breakfast for dinner is actually a family favorite at my house that is made frequently. Scrambled eggs are a great addition to your brunch menu as well!
