What is an Egg in the Hole
An egg in the hole is a classic way of cooking eggs. Normally a raw egg is cracked into the center of a slice of bread that has a piece removed for the egg to nest in. The egg cooks attached to the piece of bread and is served either as a fried egg or a sunny side up egg. If the egg is fried, the bread is flipped so it can be cooked on both sides. If the egg is sunny side up only one side is cooked and the result is a runny egg in the center and the bread is dipped in the runny yolk.
For this recipe I decided why reinvent the wheel? A bagel already has a hole in the center….
What is an Air Fryer?
If you have not yet used an air fryer, you likely have questions like I did. Many people think it will taste just like deep fried food but magically be healthier. Unfortunately, that is not the case. In my opinion, air fried food tastes completely different than deep fried food. So if you are really into the deep fried taste (not just the crispy factor) you may not like it. And the reason they taste so different is the oil. Air fryers use only a small amount of oil if any at all. Air fryers make food crispy because they are small but powerful convection ovens, but the oil flavor that deep frying provides is omitted.
For me, this is a great way to get a nice crunch because I am not a fan of the heavy oily taste of deep frying.
My Air Fryer
I have a Ninja Foodi air fryer and I LOVE IT! I use it several times each week and it makes the crispiest frozen tater tots and parmesan garlic French fries and honestly it’s way faster than using my regular oven. In this particular air fryer, the basket is a pull out, dual zone drawer, and is much larger than many options out there. This makes using it so much more convenient, however it does take up more space.
Ingredients
This easy bagel sandwich is full of flavor even though it uses only a few simple ingredients. You probably already have them in your pantry or fridge. Let me walk you through what I used and why and where you can add or substitute.
- Bagels – Breakfast bagels can be so much more than just cream cheese! For this egg bagel I used everything bagels but you can use a plain bagel, egg bagels, or fresh bagels from a local bagel shop. I have not tried this with mini bagels but I suppose you could use them with quail eggs if you have access to those.
- Eggs – One of the main components of this delicious breakfast sandwich is eggs. I make mine as sunny side up because I love a good runny yolk. But you can cook them a little longer and make them more like a fried egg if you prefer. I use regular store bought cage free eggs but you can use brown eggs or even fresh eggs if you have your own chickens.
- Cheese – Eggs with melty cheese are truly the best in my opinion and a handful of cheese goes on each bagel here. Any kind of cheese will work, but I used shredded cheddar cheese. You could also use a slice of cheese if you prefer. American cheese, cheddar cheese, Colby jack or even pepper jack cheese for a little spice will all work. If you love cheesy goodness you can also use Velveeta slices.
- Onions – I chose to use a white onion and green onion here. You definitely don’t need both, but I happened to have both. But you can use any of the three, white, yellow, or red onions here.
- Chipotle Aioli – If you by chance have Kraft chipotle aioli on hand, it is the perfect spread for the top of the bagel. I have had a hard time finding it lately though. So if you don’t have it or can’t find it, you can make my copycat chipotle aioli. You can also use mayo or butter.
Cooking Options
I used my air fryer for this recipe but you could also make these in the oven if you do not have an air fryer. To make them in the oven, preheat to 400 degrees and bake for 5-10 minutes until the whites of the egg are no longer runny and the cheese is melty.
