Curry Lime Yogurt Sweet Potato Fry Dipping Sauce
Often times my fridge contains more condiments than actual food and if you appreciate dipping sauces the way I do, you can probably relate. I mean is it even American to eat French fries with out a sauce like ketchup? I think not. So when I became obsessed with making sweet potato fries I set out on a quest to find the perfect dipping sauce to compliment them. While I do enjoy spicy ketchup or a sweet chili sauce on my sweet potato fries, my favorite dipping sauce is actually a yogurt dip! I know, I was shocked too. But when I tell you this creamy dipping sauce is one of the most delicious dipping sauces, I am not joking. It was inspired by a local Denver restaurant and combines curry, lime, and yogurt for a super flavorful sauce. Let me show you how to make it! Full recipe card below.

What is Curry Lime Yogurt Dipping Sauce?
If you live in Denver or have ever passed through the C terminal at DIA, you may have dinned at Root Down before. And if I am being completely honest, I have visited their airport location far more times than the original in the Highlands. Since I am frequently on the go, I often order the sweet potato fries because they are easy to grab and take on the plane. The first time I ordered them I was instantly intrigued by the sweet potato fry sauce recipe of curry lime yogurt. After asking about the sauce I learned that it was a big hit and everyone loved it. So I gave it a go and found a surprising flavor in a good way!
Naturally I set out to find a way to make this incredible sweet potato fry dip at home because you know I love my copycat recipes 🙂
The Fry Sauce Experiment
As the name of the sauce suggests, it contains yogurt, lime juice, and curry. So I started there. I bought three different types of yogurt, plain Greek yogurt, vanilla, and lime. I used Greek yogurt because it generally has less flavor than other options and I wanted a relatively neutral base.
The first batch I made was with the plain Greek yogurt. It wasn’t bad, but it was just missing something. It felt like it needed sugar but after adding quite a bit, I moved onto the vanilla thinking it would have more sweetness to start with.
The vanilla Greek yogurt was definitely my favorite. It had more flavor and sweetness out of the gate and the additional ingredients made it taste just like the Root Down dipping sauce. It also had a similar yellowy color when I was done.
The lime yogurt wasn’t a bad option either. It had a similar sweetness to the vanilla, but it felt a little too limey and it was neon green which in general is less appetizing.
Ingredients
This tasty twist on a dipping sauce is an easy recipe with simple steps. It uses basic ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and fridge. Let me walk you through what worked and what did not.
Vanilla Greek Yogurt – As I mentioned above, I tested a few different yogurt options here to make sure the taste was spot on. A lot of creamy dips use plain yogurt as a base but to my surprise the vanilla Greek yogurt worked the best because of the sweetness and neutral flavor. My second choice would be the lime yogurt and my last choice would be the plain. You could also try this sauce with sour cream, but I think you will need quite a bit more sugar to get the taste correct. I do not recommend Mayo or Miracle whip because they are just too tangy and salty for this copycat sauce.
Bonus, if you use the Chobani plain, vanilla, or key lime Greek yogurt this recipe is gluten free!Â
Curry Powder – Curry powder is a primary ingredient in this sauce and is a potent spice often associated with Indian recipes. It is frequently made with earthy and aromatic spices like cumin, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, and pepper. But some recipes may also have a spicy kick or smoky flavor from chili powder, cayenne, and smoked paprika. While you can make your own, I use store bought curry powder. Just remember this is a strong spice and a little bit goes a long way. You can always add more but you can’t take it away.
Limes – The other primary ingredient in this sauce is lime juice. I used fresh limes because I keep them on hand for cooking and making Moscow mule cocktails but you can used bottled lime juice as well.
Garlic Powder – Normally I use jarred garlic when I cook, but for this recipe I think garlic powder works better to mix into the sauce. This adds a bit of extra flavor that takes it to the next level. You can also use garlic salt, just be careful not to add too much salt later.
Sugar – As I mentioned above, I think this sauce needs a bit of sweetness to round out the flavor combination of the earthiness in the curry powder. The vanilla yogurt adds a good amount of sweetness but I felt like it needed a little bit more. I used plain white sugar.
Salt – I like to be in control of the salt content in my food but that doesn’t mean I don’t use it. Food needs salt, but it doesn’t need so much that it’s all you taste. I used regular table salt because I felt like sea salt was just too big. Note if you choose to use garlic salt above, use less salt here to avoid overly salty flavors.
Black Pepper – I used just a dash of black pepper here.
Sweet Potato French Fries – Try my easy air fryer sweet potato fries recipe. I use frozen sweet potato fries most of the time I make fries. Why? Because it is super convenient, I always have a bag in my freezer, and I can make as little or as much as I want. I have made from scratch homemade sweet potato fries before, but I honestly don’t think they are worth the extra work. Do yourself a favor and save the time for the main course. I used the Kroger brand of crinkled sweet potato fries that I found in the freezer section at my grocery store. If you do not have an air fryer you can also use baked sweet potato fries too.

Storage
The best way to store leftover curry lime dipping sauce is in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Since this contains yogurt, the shelf life will be limited and can sour or grow bacteria if kept too long. I usually only make what I intend to use for a meal so I do not waste any.
When to Make Curry Lime Dipping Sauce
While this super simple recipe is the best dipping sauce for sweet potato fries, I have also used it to top chicken dishes, tacos, rice bowls, quesadillas, and as a sandwich spread. The light and refreshing taste of the lime compliments spicy and savory flavors as well as sweet. This dip is perfect for crispy sweet potato fries but can also be used on regular fries as well. You can whip it up in five minutes and everyone will think you are a true domestic goddess!
