What is Sangria?

Sangria is usually a large batch alcoholic drink similar to a punch and is made with wine, lots of fruit, and sometimes a non-alcoholic mixer like club soda, lemon-lime soda, or ginger ale. Traditional Spanish recipes are usually a red wine sangria. Red sangria is often made with red wine and often orange liqueur, citrus fruits like orange slices, and sometimes even apricot Brandy. The other option is a white sangria recipe. As the name suggests white sangria is made with a crisp white wine and sweet fruit flavors like green apples, white peaches, fresh citrus, or berries.

This white wine sangria recipe is the best option for summer months with sweet raspberries, blueberries, and a tart green apple for a refreshing summer taste.

Summer Sangria Ingredient List

This easy sangria recipe only requires six basic ingredients and can be made for one person or a whole party. Here are my notes for you 😉

A variety of ingredients are displayed on a countertop, perfect for a refreshing white sangria recipe with vodka. Included are bottles of Smirnoff Raspberry and Green Apple vodka, a can of Canada Dry ginger ale, a green apple, bowls of strawberries and blueberries. Red and white fabric is partially visible in the background.

White Wine – You know I love my wine, but you don’t need anything fancy for this recipe. I used an inexpensive bottle of sauvignon blanc. This is a sweeter wine that has lighter citrus notes. It lands somewhere between a Pinot Gris and a Riesling in terms of sweetness and dryness. If you prefer really sweet wine, I would use a Moscato or a Riesling, just make sure you do not get a sparkling Moscato if you go that route. If you prefer a dry white wine, I would use a Pinot Grigio. I do not recommend using a chardonnay since they frequently have an oaky or buttery taste.

Raspberry Vodka – I used a raspberry flavored vodka to keep with the red, white, and blue theme. It also adds a touch of sweetness without having to make a simple syrup. This would also be really good with blueberry vodka or a citrus vodka. If you use a plain vodka you may need to add a little bit of sugar or simple syrup.

Ginger Ale – I always like to keep ginger ale on hand and it is a great mixer for cocktails. It has a lot of fizz and adds a bit of sweetness. You can also use Sprite, 7Up, ginger beer, or any other white soda.

Two festive drinks in clear glasses garnished with blueberries, raspberries, and star-shaped apple slices. The drinks have white straws and American flag decorations in the background, suggesting they are patriotic-themed beverages.

Fruit – I used fresh raspberries, blueberries, and green apples for my sangria. If you want to keep the red, white. and blue patriotic look you can use strawberries too. If not, feel free to use all kinds of different fruits. Peaches, apples, oranges, grapes, and berries are all great options.

Mixing – This is a very easy drink to mix. Simply add all the ingredients and stir. It’s as simple as that!

Ice – This easy white wine sangria is best served chilled. I usually refrigerate my ingredients prior to mixing but I recommend adding ice cubes too. When I make cocktails with ice I like to use large ice molds or ice spheres because they don’t melt as fast and water down your drink. You can also freeze the fruit and let them chill the drink as well.

Glasses – I used my favorite tapered wine glasses, but you can use a rocks glass or a cocktail glass too.

How to Make the Stars

I made the white star shapes out of granny smith apples and these mini cookie cutters. Just slice the apple thin on one side and use the cookie cutters to cut out the stars. I used all three sizes and placed them close to the edge, careful not to get the skin or the core. This works best if you do not cut the apple too thick. If you have a hard time getting the shapes to pop out, you cut it too thick. When I did that I used the top flat end of a chop stick to push it out.

Sliced green apples and small star-shaped apple pieces are arranged on a cutting board. Several star-shaped cookie cutters are nearby, hinting at creativity for your white sangria recipe with vodka. A red, white, and blue star-patterned cloth is partially visible in the background.

Pro Tip: After you cut out the stars, dip them in lemon juice or lime juice to prevent them from turning brown.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 bottle of Sauvignon Blanc or sweet wine

  • 3/4 cup Blueberries
  • 1 Granny Smith Apple cut into stars
  • 2 tbsp Lemon Juice

Instructions

  1. Wash all fruit and lay out to dry.
  2. Slice the green apple into thin rounds about a 1/8 inch thick.
  3. Using a mini star cookie cutter, cut out the star shapes and dip in lemon juice to keep them from browning.
  4. Combine the wine, vodka, and half of the ginger ale in a large pitcher.

Two glasses of fruit-infused beverages are garnished with star-shaped apple slices, reminiscent of a white sangria recipe with vodka. The drink also includes raspberries and blueberries. White straws are placed in each glass, and more star-shaped apple slices are scattered around the glasses on a marble surface.

Single Serve Option

This is a great cocktail for a crowd, but maybe you only want one. This works really well with mini bottles of wine and vodka shooters too! Use all the same ingredients but only 6 oz of wine, 1 oz of vodka, and 4 oz of ginger ale.

Mocktail Option

Maybe you don’t drink or have kiddos who want to join in the fun. No problem. Just substitute the white wine base with white grape juice and add a few drops of raspberry oil to replace the fruity flavor of the raspberry vodka. Add the ginger ale and fresh fruit as the recipe calls for.

When to Serve Patriotic White Wine Sangria

This easy white sangria is the perfect cocktail for a hot summer day when you want to add a little red, white, and blue to the celebration. I love making it for the 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day backyard BBQs. It’s always a huge hit at summer parties! While I often make this as a summer drink, it could easily transition into a white Christmas sangria with some cranberries and rosemary. It would also make a great addition to a brunch menu. Afterall, it does have fruit in it 😉
