What is a Moscow Mule?
If you have never had a Moscow mule, you are definitely missing out! It is an easy cocktail with simple ingredients ordinarily served in signature copper mugs. They are very refreshing and the perfect choice on a hot summer day. They can be altered with a variety of flavors and alcohol but a classic Moscow mule is made with vodka, non-alcoholic ginger beer, and fresh lime juice. If you are not a vodka fan you can also make a Kentucky mule which uses bourbon in place of vodka or a Mexican Mule which uses tequila.
Ironically I accidently invented this when I was out of regular vodka and worked with what I had which turned out to be a great idea for a delicious cocktail! This recipe is a spin on a classic mule using blueberry vodka, ginger beer, and lemon juice. Served in the notable copper mugs which have made this a popular and very recognizable beverage in the United States.
Ingredient List
This refreshing cocktail is the perfect combination of sweet and sour and only uses five basic ingredients! It can be made for one person or a whole party. Here are my notes for you 😉
Blueberry Vodka – I used a blueberry flavored vodka to add extra blueberry flavor to this mule. Blueberry vodka tastes a lot like blueberries and really adds a lot of flavor to this cocktail. I used Smirnoff but I believe there is Stoli blueberry vodka as well. But feel free to use your favorite brand if they make blueberry.
Ginger Beer – If you are new to Moscow mules, ginger beer is not actually beer and it is non-alcoholic. Many ginger beers are not brewed but carbonated like a soft drink and are similar to ginger ale. This makes them a good idea for cocktail mixers or for mocktails. If I had to describe ginger beer I would say it tastes like sparkling water with a strong ginger flavor and a little spice. Ginger beer can be found in grocery stores and many liquor stores near club soda and other mixers. If you want a more detailed breakdown, check out my side by side taste test on the best ginger beers.
Fresh Lemons – I used fresh lemons to both garnish the cocktail and add some acidity to the drink. You can also use packaged lemon juice, but lemons are less expensive and add a level of freshness and aesthetic to it.
Blueberries – I also added frozen blueberries to my recipe for extra flavor, garnish, and additional chilling. These are optional and don’t need to be frozen, but definitely make it look pretty.
Fresh Mint Springs – This ingredient is also optional but I think it adds an extra level of freshness and flavor. I think basil leaves would also be really good here.
Mixing – This is a very easy drink to mix. Simply add all the ingredients to a mug and stir. It’s as simple as that! I do not recommend using a cocktail shaker here since the the ginger beer is carbonated.
Ice – This cocktail is best served chilled. I usually refrigerate my ingredients prior to mixing but I recommend adding crushed ice or ice cubes too. When I make cocktails with ice I often use large ice molds or ice spheres because they don’t melt as fast and water down your drink. You can also freeze the blueberries and let them chill the drink as well.
Copper Mugs – I still remember the first time I saw a Moscow mule because of the unique and memorable copper mugs. It made me want one even when I had no clue what was in it. But the copper mugs aren’t just for looks, they are the best way to enjoy them. The copper mug keeps the mule extra cold and allows you to enjoy a frosty drink down to the very last drop.

Large Batch Option
Having a party and need a larger serving? You can also make this as a pitcher cocktail. Combine the above ingredients in equal ratios to the recipe above in a punch bowl or beverage dispenser. Only add ice to individual mugs not the large batch container. The ginger beer will lose it’s carbonation just like soda does, so this should be made when you are ready to serve and the ginger beer should be pre-chilled.
Mocktail Option
Maybe you don’t drink or have kiddos who want to join in the fun. No problem. Just substitute the blueberry vodka for a few drops of blueberry extract or blueberry simple syrup to replace the fruity flavor of the vodka. Add the ginger beer and fresh fruit as the recipe calls for as ginger beer is non-alcoholic.
