What is an Egg in the Hole
An egg in the hole is a classic way of cooking eggs. Normally a raw egg is cracked into the center of a slice of bread that has a piece removed for the egg to nest in. The egg cooks attached to the piece of bread and is served either as a fried egg or a sunny side up egg. If the egg is fried, the bread is flipped so it can be cooked on both sides. If the egg is sunny side up only one side is cooked and the result is a runny egg in the center and the bread is dipped in the runny yolk.
For this recipe I decided why reinvent the wheel? A bagel already has a hole in the center….
What is an Air Fryer?
You have likely heard of the new food trend of air frying and probably already own one. But every time I share a video of me air frying something on Instagram, I get a lot of questions about what it tastes like. So let’s start at the beginning, shall we?
In my opinion, the best way to describe an air fryer is they are really powerful convection ovens that are portable. The hot air makes food very crispy without drenching your food in vegetable oil making it a healthier option. Unlike a deep frying, air frying can be done with a small amount of oil and sometimes none at all. I personally don’t enjoy super greasy and heavily oiled fried food so the air fryer is a great way to have crispy food without the deep fried taste.
One of the most common questions I get is does it taste like deep fried food? No. In my opinion, they taste very different. With the air fryer you get the crispiness of something that has been fried but without all the the added oil taste.
My Air Fryer
I will say, when I used my first air fryer I wasn’t completely sold. When they first came out I didn’t feel like I had room in my kitchen for one so I chose to get the air fryer lid for my Instant pot instead. This way I would only need to store the extra lid and not another appliance. But it was very awkward to use and as a result, I didn’t use it much.
Then I reconsidered and asked for a Ninja Foodi air fryer for Christmas. And I LOVE IT! I use it several times each week and it makes the crispiest frozen tater tots and parmesan garlic French fries! The Ninja is a different type of fryer in that the basket is a pull out drawer and is much larger than my old one. This makes using it so much more convenient. It has two zones which can be used simultaneously or as one large mega zone as it’s called. The only draw back is the size. It does take up more space, but in my opinion it is totally worth it!
Ingredients
This easy bagel sandwich is full of flavor even though it uses only a few simple ingredients. You probably already have them in your pantry or fridge. Let me walk you through what I used and why and where you can add or substitute.
Bagels – Breakfast bagels can be so much more than just cream cheese! For this egg bagel I used everything bagels but you can use a plain bagel, egg bagels, or fresh bagels from a local bagel shop. I have not tried this with mini bagels but I suppose you could use them with quail eggs if you have access to those.
Eggs – One of the main components of this delicious breakfast sandwich is eggs. I make mine as sunny side up because I love a good runny yolk. But you can cook them a little longer and make them more like a fried egg of you prefer. I use regular store bought cage free eggs but you can use brown eggs or even fresh eggs if you have your own chickens.
Cheese – Eggs with melty cheese are truly the best in my opinion and a handful of cheese goes on each bagel here. Any kind of cheese will work, but I used shredded cheddar cheese. You could also use a slice of cheese if you prefer. American cheese, cheddar cheese, Colby jack or even pepper jack cheese for a little spice will all work. If you love cheesy goodness you can also use Velveeta slices.
Onions – I chose to use a white onion and green onion here. You definitely don’t need both, but I happened to have both. But you can use any of the three, white, yellow, or red onions here.
Chipotle Aioli – If you by chance have Kraft chipotle aioli on hand, it is the perfect spread for the top of the bagel. I have had a hard time finding it lately though. So if you don’t have it or can’t find it, you can make my copycat version here. You can also use mayo or butter.
Cooking Options
I used my air fryer for this recipe but you could also make these in the oven if you do not have an air fryer. To make them in the oven, preheat to 400 degrees and bake for 5-10 minutes until the whites of the egg are no longer runny and the cheese is melty.
