What are Bagel Breakfast Sandwiches?
Usually a bagel breakfast sandwich consists of a some kind of plain bagel or flavored bagel, a meat, a cheese, and sometimes extras like, red onions, avocado, bell peppers, or green onion. All the ingredients are assembled on top of the bagel and warmed up or toasted to make a delicious breakfast sandwich.
Bagel Breakfast Sandwich Ingredients
This easy bagel sandwich is full of flavor even though it uses only a few simple ingredients. You probably already have them in your pantry or fridge. Let me walk you through what I used and why and where you can add or substitute.
Bagels – Breakfast bagels can be so much more than just cream cheese! For this egg bagel sandwich I used everything bagels but you can use egg bagels or your favorite bagels. In my opinion, nothing beats homemade bagels from a local bagel shop.
Eggs – One of the main components of this sandwich is scrambled eggs. I make my own scrambled eggs with this recipe, but feel free to scramble your eggs how you like. I use regular store bought cage free eggs but you can use brown eggs or even fresh eggs if you have your own chickens. If you are on a medically restrictive diet you can also use egg whites for your scrambled eggs.
Bacon – Who doesn’t love some crispy bacon! My favorite store bought bacon is the maple flavor. It adds a level of sweetness to the saltiness and it makes the whole house smell like pancakes! But feel free to use whatever brand or flavor you want. You can also use turkey bacon if you want.
Cheese – Eggs with melted cheese are truly the best in my opinion and a slice of cheese goes on each bagel here. Any kind of cheese will work, but I used Velveeta slices. I know some folks have strong feelings about Velveeta and I understand, but nothing melts quite the same as Velveeta’s cheesy goodness. Feel free to use American cheese, cheddar cheese, Colby jack or even pepper jack cheese for a little spice.
Chipotle Aioli – If you by chance have Kraft chipotle aioli on hand, it is the perfect spread for sandwiches like this! I have had a hard time finding it lately though. So if you don’t have it or can’t find it, make my copycat version here.
Cooking Options
There are a few different components to this bagel sandwich. First there is the scrambled eggs. I make my scrambled eggs on the stovetop in a small pan. They only take 5 minutes to make this way. You can also microwave them but they take almost just as long.
My favorite way to make bacon is in the oven. I line a sheet pan with aluminum foil and place a wire rack onto the pan. This elevates the bacon so the grease drips down onto the foil and allows the bacon to crisp up. In my opinion this is the best way to make bacon! Yes you can fry it in a pan, but it is SO messy.
The bagel. Once my eggs and bacon are cooked. I place my assembled sandwiches in the oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese and toast the bagel. You can also use the air fryer or a toaster oven for this part.
