What is salmon dip?

While I have seen many iterations, salmon dip is usually made from a creamy base like cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, or some combination. Then smoked salmon, seasonings, and fresh herbs are added for extra flavor. This is typically served with a variety of crackers or other dippers.

Ingredients

This easy smoked salmon dip uses only eight simple ingredients and is ready in 10 minutes! I will break down what I used and what ingredients will give you the best results.

A variety of cooking ingredients are arranged on a counter, including a bottle of olive oil, a pack of honey smoked salmon, a carton of chives, a lemon, cream cheese, and spice jars of dill weed, black pepper, and garlic powder. The background is a light grey surface.

Cream Cheese – The base in this dip is cream cheese. I used the light version, but feel free to use any version or brand you want. You can also use whipped cream cheese or dill cream cheese.

Smoked Salmon – I do think the kind of salmon you use matters here. I used smoked salmon. You can definitely use fresh hot smoked salmon or leftover smoked salmon if you have it. I decided to make this an easy appetizer and I used store bought smoked salmon. I can find Honey Smoked Fish Company at Costco, but your local Kroger, Walmart, or Target grocery store should have it as well.

Olive Oil – I used a splash of olive oil to thin out the dip a little. A good substitute would be avocado oil.

Fresh Chives – I used these to flavor the dip and to garnish. Chives add a ton of flavor and make for a pretty presentation. Green onion will be your closest substitute.

Garlic – When I cook I almost always use jarred garlic, but for this recipe I felt like garlic powder was the better option to blend everything. Feel free to use real garlic or garlic powder.

Dill – This adds a bit of herbal flavor and seasoning and is commonly paired with salmon. I used dried but you can use fresh dill as well.

Black Pepper – For a little bit of extra seasoning. Note, I did not salt this because smoked salmon tends to be on the salty side. If you choose not to use smoked salmon you will probably need to add salt.

Lemon Juice – To balance out the dip and add some acidity to the cream cheese mixture I added a little fresh lemon juice. This is a great way to cut some of the fat in the salmon.

A plate of pita chips surrounds a serving of salmon dip garnished with flaked salmon. The dish is accompanied by fresh parsley, a slice of lemon, and a whole lemon in the background. The setting is on a wooden surface.

Shaping the Cheese Ball

This can be served in dip or ball form. To make a cheese ball, use a piece of plastic wrap and spray it with cooking spray. Add the cream cheese salmon mixture to the center and wrap it up. Then use your hands to form a ball. Once the desired shape is reached, unwrap and serve on a plate.
