What is Green Goddess Dressing?
Green goddess dressing is said to have originated in San Francisco in the early 1920s at the Palace Hotel as a compliment to the play Green Goddess. While this classic old school dressing has been around for some time, it has become increasingly difficult to find in the grocery store. It is a creamy dressing made with a variety of herbs, and fresh ingredients like lemon juice and garlic, as well as a dairy base like yogurt, mayo, or sour cream.
Why I Love This Recipe
This easy green goddess dressing recipe uses simple ingredients and is ready in just 10 minutes. It requires no chopping and is full of the good stuff! It can be used on your favorite salads, as a sandwich spread, or as dip. It adds a ton of fresh flavor to a dish and is very versatile. I have even made pasta with it!
Green Goddess Dressing Ingredients
This creamy green goddess dressing is so simple to make and full of fresh produce. It only takes 10 minutes and requires no chopping at all! Let me walk you through what I used and where substitutions can be made.
Greek Yogurt – I used plain non-fat Greek yogurt for this recipe because it makes a good creamy base without influencing the flavor much. You can use any kind of plain yogurt that doesn’t contain too much sugar since this is more of a savory dressing. As an alternative to yogurt, sour cream would probably be the next best thing, however, I have not tested this recipe with sour cream.
Mayonnaise – Mayonnaise is the other main ingredient in this dressing. It adds the salty, tangy flavor the creamy yogurt needs. Feel free to use whatever brand you want but I prefer real mayonnaise. You can also make homemade mayo if you like but it’s definitely not necessary.
Lemon Juice – Most salad dressing recipes call for some form of acid whether it is from apple cider vinegar, lime juice, regular vinegar, or lemon juice. I used lemon juice here to add that acidity and a fresh note.
Olive Oil – Most salad dressing recipes also call for some form of oil to keep the dressing runny. I used extra virgin olive oil but you could also use avocado oil or vegetable oil.
Italian Parsley – Parsley is the primary ingredient that gives this dressing it’s green color and flavor. You need to use fresh parsley not dried for this to work. Italian parsley is the one that looks almost just like cilantro and it has a stronger flavor than curly parsley. When adding the parsley make sure you use both the stems and leaves as most of the flavor in parsley actually comes from the stems. It will all be pureed, so it will not be weird, I promise.
Basil – I have made this multiple ways, using both fresh basil and dried basil and I don’t think there is much of a difference in flavor between the two. If you have your own herb garden and have an abundance of fresh herbs like basil, by all means use fresh! When I made it with fresh basil I used about 10 leaves in lieu of 1/4 tsp of dried. If you do not have any fresh basil on hand, you can absolutely use dried basil.
Red Onion – Onions can add a ton of flavor to a dish and I put onions in almost everything! For this recipe I used red onions since they do not get cooked in this dish and red onions are the best onion variety to use raw. My second choice here would be a green onion. While they have a different flavor than red onions I think they would still work in this recipe quite well.
Garlic – When I cook I almost always use jarred garlic because it’s easy and keeps a long time in the fridge. In this recipe I used jarred garlic but you can definitely use fresh if you prefer especially since you don’t have to chop it. The conversion is a 1:1 ratio of tsp to garlic cloves. This recipe calls for 1/4 tsp minced garlic so you would use 1/4 clove of garlic.
Mustard – For this recipe I used dry mustard which gives it a little extra flavor. If you do not have dry mustard you can use 3/4 tablespoon of regular mustard.
Salt & Pepper – Like all dishes a little bit of salt and pepper goes a long way with the flavor. You can use regular table salt or sea salt here.
* NOTE: This recipe is gluten free when using the same ingredients I used. Not all mayo and yogurt are gluten free.
Mixing Options
Making your own salad dressings is very easy, but creamy dressings like this green sauce are best made in a food processor, bullet, or blender to fully puree the combination of fresh herbs. I made mine in my Ninja Foodi blender with the bullet attachment on spread mode. By mixing it this way I was able to add all my ingredients in whole without chopping my fresh basil or parsley saving a ton of time.

Storage
The best way to store leftover dressing is in the fridge in an airtight container like a mason jar for up to 5 days. Since this recipe contains yogurt the shelf life will be limited and can sour if kept too long. I usually only make what I intend to use within a few days so I do not waste any.
